Obviously I like Maine but summer here is wall-to-wall tourists, It's all very doable. Ride west towards the mountains you get long stretches of open roads and small villages. Ride east you get the beautiful coast but all the traffic. Your choice.

I'd love to do that.....need a city to base out of near the great riding, plus some lodging options.
    Any recommendations????

    Rockies

I think the Rockies would be great. I have never been on motorcycle so I have no suggestions for a home base.

    Durango.

Southwest corner of the state. Mesa Verde, Million Dollar Highway, Silverton narrow gauge train, Casinos in near by towns, white water rafting, fishing, camping, sailplane rides. Many hotels, restaurants and brew pubs. Local dealership. And great rides no matter which direction you head out of town.

    Just a thought.

For what it's worth, the two times we've taken a bike trip to Colorado, we based it out of the Longmont area. Seems to work really well.

A great spot in the south of Colorado to base out of is Durango -- less than three hours to Moab, Utah from there too. Lots of great rides in the area. So much to see in the north, central and south areas of the state it's kinda impossible to pinpoint one central location to hit it all. Definitely would defer to forum members who know Colorado the best to make recommendations but had an amazing time there last summer. Can definitely attest that the main tourist spots (ski resort towns) are off-the-chart expensive and crowded in the summer (goes without saying) so places like Durango (or Longmont / Lakewood as also suggested) are solid options.

I've been up there a bunch on the FJR, great riding. Back when I had a VTX, they used to run the annual Coloradical out of Lakewood. The LaQuinta there is 925 miles from my house; a nice one day drive.

MontRose has been a favorite for several Rockies Gold events from the GL riders forum. So many great rides from there and good motels. I try and make it an annual ride out to there. Will be there in two weeks, staying at the Red Arrow which has hosted the group for several years.
Some of the best riding in the country in the Rockies and in some of the red rock canyons of Colorado. I can assist with planning and provide additional info if wanted. Just let me know.

    Hi Steve,

I go there every year, at least once - last year twice. I would suggest Gunnison. It's a town on HWY 50 - just west of Colorado Springs and Pueblo, with a population of about 6000.

I searched hotel / motel on google - there are 20 or so. Elevation arount 7,000 ft. Easy to get there - I-70 then thru the Springs. Only one high pass (Monarch) to go over using this route. Awesome rides - Pikes Peak, Million $ highway, Royal Gorge, etc., are all close.

The only challenge would be the timing. Too early - passes not open yet - too late...same thing. I would suggest late August to early September - not as many tourists, and a nice break from the heat when in the mountains. If you all decide to go, I would be glad to help.
