He could very well want to follow me home to get my ID to prove who I am, but I'm not required to carry ID with me while walking my dog. I'm not from New York so I guess I'd have issues there if they require you carry ID at all times.
Yea, I know it sucks but all you are doing is verifying who you are. Not a big deal to me. Other folks make it a big deal. Not sure why. It's stupid to make a Capital case out of it while on the street; a cop has actually plenty of leeway (sometimes unprofessionally) to develop probable cause and detain you. Then your day and/or night gets worse.

Show ID and be polite.

Been there. Done it. On both types of approaches by LEO's....
