I don't have any clever ideas, but I do have an idea. You could install a cylinder lock that has a tab on the end of it. That tab rotates when you lock it. Have it rotate into a slot inside the pocket (you will have to cut that slot). If you could get a black lock it would look original.
If you do not want to cut a slot, you could install an "L" bracket in the pocket for the tab to swing under when locked.
New idea! I just went and checked, and you could use the gas panel lock. If you could order one that fit your key, or maybe that can be adjusted for your key?? Hmmm .....
