    Some great suggestions here I hadn't considered -- neoprene fork covers and pipe insulation. Thanks for the input guys. It's got me looking in the right direction now.

    inexpensive and super easy to remove when not needed.

    Another inexpensive option could be a tennis racquet replacement grip or overgrip, in black with no logo. These are usually around $5. Easy to put on and replace and feel soft to a passenger.
