My first HD was an '87 sportster I bought new, nobody told me I wasn't supposed to tour on it. I traded it in on a Fat Boy in '92 with 30k miles on it. I wanted to be like Bronson!

I still want a 48, but I'm a little large... those new bikes look silly with the big radiators.

Yeah they are cool looking but the radiators are to big.Some of the Sportsters are cool also but there is just one problem I am way to big looking on them.

The sooner you get a person on a bike, the more chance you have of keepin 'em on a bike. Sporties" might be a bit big/expensive (?) for some folks just starting to ride. IMHO, HD would rather have you start out on a low-cost/small HD than, heaven forbid, ANY Metric!

Smaller 'urban' bikes are slowly being 'introduced' by other manufacturers as well. (950 isn't exactly 'tiny', but Yami brought out the urban 'Bolt' this year)

Besides, if shopping for a 750cc or less 'urban' bike, your choices are virtually nil. You know the 'bad-boy(girl)/rebel/cool kid on campus' would rather have "A HARLEY" () than a 'lost in the 50's' Suzy S-40 or a techno CTX700. (Just FYI, the Bolt 950 is priced similar to a CTX700)

To me, apparently more than just 1 Manufacturer feels 'small urban' is an 'emerging market'. One with a style that some feel already leans towards certain aspects of HD's 'image'. . Not too far of a stretch from the recently introduced 48 and 72 bikes... Only natural that they would pick up on it.

Beyond the small size,,, lest we forget,, HD has TRIPLED their 4 valve water cooled bike offerings by adding these (2) new models,,, Modern technology with H2O is coming to a HD dealer near you, and it's about dayum time!

The engine in this new HD looks like a small displacement Revolution engine that is used in the V-rod and working on the valves on a V-rod are a PITA.
