Something I learned when going through the VW TDI fiasco: US passenger vehicle diesel emission standards are more strict than than they are in Europe. US passenger vehicle gasoline emission standards are less strict than they are in Europe.
I didn't read any of the articles but I would find it easy to believe the GL1800 meets US standards but not European standards.

According to the magazine link below, the pictures originally came from someone on Twitter. In addition, there are flaws with those photos that indicate they are from someone's imagination.
