Good Riding in SW Colorado and lots of things to see also. Phantom has worked hard to find a good location for riding and hanging, and to also pretty inexpensive lodging. Bring your riding ar$$ and you will be able to enjoy some beautiful country, including these and more:

—San Juan Scenic Byway, including Delores, Rico, Lizard Head Pass, Telluride, Dallas Divide, Ouray, Red Mountain Pass, Silverton, Molas Pass, Coal Bank Pass, and Durango. One of the most beautiful rides in the US. Do it all or at least do the Durango to Ouray portions and return the same route. It is great in both directions with different views.

—Moab, UT. Perhaps a ride into Arches NP, Dead Horse SP, scenic ride along the Colorado River, Canyonlands NP, OR the LaSal Mountain Loop. Can’t do them all but this would be a fun day.

—Chama, NM. Durango, Pagosa Springs, Chama. Perhaps a ride to the top of Cumbres and LaManga Passes and back to Chama and take a different route back to Cortez.

—Monument Valley. Relive the Old West with a ride to Kayenta, Monument Valley, Mexican Hat, and perhaps head north out of Mexican Hat and visit Goosenecks SP, and then up Mokee Dugway before heading back to Cortez.

—Mesa Verde National Park. Just outside Cortez. Magnificent. Nice ride to and through the park (it is pretty big), but even better if you spend the day and visit some of the cliff-dwellings.

—Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. An all-day trip up to Silverton and back from Durango on the old steam train. A beautiful trip through the wilderness along the Animas River. Awesome!!!!

—Four Corners. Nothing particularly beautiful, but where else can you straddle for States at the same time.

—Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

—Ute Mountain Casino is just outside of Cortez, for anyone interested.

And hopefully you can take advantage of great rides a little farther away on your ride to and from Cortez. Rides such as:

—CO-92 along the North Rim of the Black Canyon NO.

—Independence Pass from Aspen to Twin Lakes. Perhaps CO-133 from Delta over McClure Pass to Redstone and along the Crystal River to Carbondale and then east to Aspen and Independence Pass.

—Grand Mesa Scenic Hwy. CO-65 from I-70 climbs some 5,000 feet to reach the top of the world’s largest flattop Mesa with acres of forests and lakes, then dropping down to Cedaredge and Delta.

—Unaweep-Tebaguache Scenic Byway through the Delores River Canyon to Gateway (the 5 star resort in Gateway is magnificent, but it is very expensive; the car museum at the resort is really nice) to Unaweep Divide to Whitewater.

—Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road over the top and above timberline.

—Wolf Creek Pass on US-160 between Pagosa Springs and South Fork.

—CO-149 Gunnison to South Fork via Blue Mesa Reservoir, Lake City, the Slumgullion Slide, Slumgullion Pass, Spring Creek Pass, north Clear Creek Falls, Rio Grande River Valley, and Creede (where the coward Bob Ford was killed).

—Mount Evans or Pikes Peak. Both above 14,000 feet and paved to the summit. (Go in the morning to have clear weather and avoid dangerous thunderstorms.

—US-50 along the Arkansas River from Canon City to Salida, then over Monarch Pass to Gunnison.

And much more. It’s all good, except for the 200 miles east of I-25 that should be part of Kansas.

F6Bster covered about everything in the area. One other thing that is possible is to ride to Durango in the morning to see the train depart and then north on the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton and be there when the train pulls in there. Watching this narrow gauge steam train is a treat.. After Silverton continue north on the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray and Ridgway then over the Dallas Divide and south down through Telluride, over Lizard Head Pass and down the Dolores River Valley back to Cortez. This is the San Juan Skyway he mentioned, with three passes above 10,000 ft and one over 11,000 ft it is a great ride. All this in only 235 miles. This is one of the greatest rides in the country and even in August you will see snow on some of the high peaks.

Can't wait

Has the route from Cortez to Cherokee been formulated?

I possibly could run from Cortez to Arkansas and cut down home, or just drag out and bounce around threw Oklahoma...

Being we have 3 or so days and 1700 miles to go I would thinkmostly Interstate 40.
That would make it about 500 miles a day, about 3 tanks of gas or so.

Pagosa springs has the hot springs that you can visit.
Remember August is monsoon season in Colorado. I've been riding there in August the last couple of years. Rain gear better be top shelf stuff.

For many years lots of loosely organized Gold Wing Rallies (GL1800riders.com board) in NY, PA, GA, CO, AZ, and other locations brought hundreds of people from all over the country, and even a few from overseas (rentals). When a good location for riding and lodging is picked, the bikes will come and good times will be had by all (or at least most)!!!!

Questions about the day rides in Cortez: Will they be one or more each day, long/short, slow/brisk? And will we know about choices/routes in advance? Paper or GPX maps? I have some "must do" roads while out that way and if not included in one of the day rides I want to incorporate them into my arrival route or my departure. I use BaseCamp/Garmin and Microsoft Streets and Trips. I may be too early for these things but dang excided about having my bike there. Thanks in advance for any info.

Meantime, I need the weather to warm up 'cmpfyr' before I think about riding :icon_wink:[/QUOTE]

Got all three bikes out today and ran them a bit to get some fuel thru them and to charge the batteries. Taking the F6B on a ride tomorrow over to Daphne. Should be sunny and close to 70 degrees for tomorrows high, even today was warmer than predicted and the beach was hopping and lots of bikes out and about.

I am sure there will be multiple rides each day. I do a lot of riding in southern Colorado and I also use Microsoft Streets and Trips for a lot of my riding. If there are specific places you want to ride to and there aren't rides going there I would be more than happy to let you help you with a gpx file of the interesting roads to where you want to visit. I consider myself a moderate speed rider, not really spirited but not slow and if you are up fora 400 mile day it opens up a lot of neat areas that are day rides from Cortez. There is really a tremendous amount of really great things to see in this area so I am sure there will be something available for every type of rider.

Even though I am familiar with the area I to am eagerly anticipating the rally and a chance to see and visit with everyone. See you in August.

I just confirmed my reservation for the show out west, wish I could do east also, but Labor Day weekend is our biggest show of the year and no kitchen passes allowed then. 400 miles makes for a nice day out here. no rush and lots to see in that amount of time. Looking forward to finally seeing another B on the road.'gw-smiley''

Farthest west, so far, was Yellowstone and the farthest south was 2016 Rally, so , looking forward to Co. Will be a 3 day ride for me.
Looks like their are a lot of Nation Forests NW of Denver, still early but looks like my routes are 80 out of Des Moines, heading west, or 90 to around Sturgis and then head south and run threw some of that forest area, down to Cortez ? 80 would be my best bet to catch some riders for company...

FOR THE Colorado guys, one of the routes I am working on is to go south from Gillette Wy. and follow the below Google map link to Cortez,

https://goo.gl/maps/1bwUqswpMTt, does it seem feasible, are their a lot of unpaved roads in the national parks any problems w/my route in August... ? Thanks in advance.

If you stick with this route you might want to consider hitting Devils Tower since you will be so close. If not, then I would suggest heading south on US-85 out of the Black Hills. A little shorter and more interesting than going over to Gillette, and you'll make the trip just as fast. Guernsey and Ft. Laramie are interesting areas from the days of the wagon trains. The Register Cliff Monument is some interesting history.

Ride from Laramie down to Walden is very nice up over the mountain, and -125 over Willow Creek Pass down to Granby is a very nice ride also. I would consider getting off I-70 at Copper Mountain, riding to Leadville to Twin Lakes and over Independence Pass (awesome) to Aspen to Carbondale, and then -133 over McClure Pass as you have planned (great road with lots of sweepers). Rest of your routing is great.

No dirt roads on the route you have selected from the Black Hills and I think you will really enjoy it. I have ridden all of those roads.

Choptop,

F6Bster is right on with his advice and your route is very solid. His advice about riding from Twin Lakes to Aspen over Independence Pass is very good, that is a great ride and the pavement is good. As you get closer to Aspen the road becomes narrow so watch out for cages. Also I would advise topping off with gas in Gillette because it is 115 miles to Douglas with no gas.

Looking good

Funny story, spent more time and frustration getting google map to get me from Leadville to Aspen, wasn't happening till I noticed that that road is closed:yikes: from Oct - May and that must mean Google won't let me plot a route threw Independence pass at this time. Thanks for the heads up on the road and the gas !

Just pulled up Independence Pass on Google terrain and zoomed in, damn, quite a road !

Good morning, Chop. Enjoy that ride, but be sure to bring some warm clothes! Most likely a bit of snow in the peaks. My ride thru the Beartooth pass, last June, was miserable. 35 degrees, sleet, snow, and high crosswinds. Hope you don't have that stuff.

If you do ride Independence Pass be sure to check out the Aspen Airport on the west side of town. I have never seen so many private jets in one place in my life. They will be parked on the field wing tip to wing tip, It is amazing the amount of money in that small resort town.

Probably leaving here from Dallas on Sunday or Monday. You're welcome to meet here. My LONG TIME buddy is going with me on his BMW 1200XR. We'll head up 287 and might hit the circle around Angel Fire, Red River, Taos loop as we have good friends who have a home in Taos. But that's not definite for sure. I think Daniels from Austin might be heading up here on his way also. We can figure it all out later. I pick up my GF on Wed. as she flies into Durango that day. Might be HOT up 287 in August but won't feel it much at 95 or 100 mph. Just have to watch out for the POPO in Quanah and Childress.............YEEHAH!

Gas, food, drink within walking distance is a bonus but most hotel/motels are in this town. Lots of "wellness" shops so stock up on brownies while you're here.

Thanks for the update. I was concerned about that Super 8. At those rates, it had to be on the lower end of the scale. The rate is good, but I guess I fit in the "bit particular" group. I like a nice, clean place, and it must have a really good bed for my back. I had looked earlier at other locations, but that time of the year they are all pretty expensive as lots of tourists going to Mesa Verde stay in Cortez. I'll be starting a 7-day trip next week and our first night will be in Cortez -- we are staying at the Hampton Inn, which I know will be nice. But expensive in August. Will have to give the lodging some thought.

Have fun in Laughlin. I've done that with friends several times and always enjoyed it, but that was years ago.

The bed is actually the best part of the room. The free breakfast is typical for Super 8. I will not be staying here for the rally if my spouse comes with. She has a thing about other peoples hair in the shower and sink. I'm not to particular but I might try another place out Sunday night for a comparison.

Stayed at Best Western directly next door on my return trip and it's definitely an upgrade. Not sure what the summer rate would be. Don't get me wrong, Super 8 is ok unless your picky. I've slept in way worse for more $$$. There's a hotel/casino about 15 miles outside Cortez, Ute Mountain is the name and it looks nice. Good Mexican Restaurant within walking distance of S 8 called La Casita. A few mom n pop breakfast dives close too. Market directly across street also if you hate eating out every day. Refrig n micro in rooms.

Actually the Ute Mountain Casino is probably closer to 15 years old. It has been through two renovations I am aware of. Also it is on reservation land so they don't serve alcohol. Not a bad buffet but it has a reputation of having very low payouts on the gambling.

Sorry Tony and Rick, I'm out on this one.

My work is busiest in summer, so vacation this time of year is rare.

I have another brother's ashes to scatter in the high country in July.

Last, I'm from the Rocky Mtn area and once it's known we're in the area, we end up with too many people to see in a short time.

Gentlemen, please forgive me for being out of pocket.

I am swamped with my work, I feel like a ONE legged man in a butt kicking contest.

My Bike has had a electrical issue since last year and I haven't had time to take it to the stealership.

Bo brake lights, no horn, no turn signals .... checked all of the relays, fuses and everything is fine.

Looking for possibly a lose negative lead or broken wire under the seat.

it is a older Goldwing so age does come into play sometimes. Only has 10,000 miles.

looking forward to both events, I need the break

Any impact from the fires currently burning?

Absolutely yes if we were doing the gathering right now. Rally still more than two months away, so hopefully Colorado will get some of the monsoonal flow in July and August and help with the situation. US-550 is still closed to the general public:

US 550 Southbound / Northbound north of Durango (Milemarker 39.5-46.5)
US 550 is closed nightly north of Durango and south of Silverton between 8PM-8AM. US 550 will be open daily 8AM-8PM with traffic escorted by a pilot car. One lane alternating traffic in place Saturday, June 16.

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNGRR), announced today it is extending the suspension of its coal-fired steam train passenger service through at least Sat, June 30, following extensive consultation with local authorities and agencies regarding their progress in containing the 416 Fire and the status of current fire, drought and weather conditions.

The whole southwest US is just so darn dry. Major fire restrictions in most of Colorado. Many areas absolutely no fires!!! Not even a grill. No smoking outside. Yes, it is that bad. In the San Juan National Forest (that is in the Durango Silverton Ouray Telluride areas of SW Colorado), They have actually closed the forest to the public.

You will have to move along for sure. Looks like the fastest is about 1750 miles mostly interstate. You have Sunday thru Wednesday so big numbers on the super slab days will give you a little fun exploring time. On my way in I'm going thru Trinidad over by 25 and should have some really good roads thru La Veta, San Luis, Conejos and Charma. Leaving I'm really taking my time up through Yellowstone, Bear Tooth Pass, Chief Joseph Hiway, Big Horn National Forrest, Devils Tower, Spearfish Canyon, Sturgis, Mount Rushmore/ Custer State Park, then to Tulsa for the SCRC National Rally the following weekend. I plan on arriving from the South and then backtrack. Yes Gooseneck State Park is on my list. I will also take a look at Mule Point Rd and if not too bad will go take a look at that view also. I have read that it is washboard and while I'm OK with dirt and gravel I hate wash board roads. Hopefully will arrive a day early and can give the area the time I need. Monument Valley is a possibility and Natural bridge is not that far away either but to the North so prob not.

The road from Trinidad through Stonewall, over Cuchara Pass, by Spanish Peaks and LaVeta is the Highway of Legends. Beautiful ride, but the 100k+ Spring Creek Fire was in the area south and west of LaVeta. Should not impact your ride unless a chance of major thunderstorms. Can get some nasty debris flies out of the burn areas and you would not want to deal with that. Normally sunny in the mornings.

We are needing volunteers to lead a couple rides for the Rally in Cherokee.

If you would like to lead a ride and have a route please contact us. The escorted rides should be no more then about 250 miles with appropriate stops and plans for lunch. For safety and to make it easier to manage we would like to keep the groups to 10 or less. There will need to be a person in the rear to assure the group stays together. The rides need to be at normal speeds (no excessive speeds), safety is a high priority.

I'm hoping y'all are having fun in Cherokee.
I'm in Hawaii for the Navy vs. Hawaii game.

Ride safe, have fun, and enjoy each others' company.
I miss all y'all.
Cheers,
Steve

My dad went to that game as well, flew over from Kauai and was at an Alumni tailgate. Perhaps the same one? I stayed up to watch it but by about 1/2 way through the 2nd qtr. decided to go to bed...
