View Full Version : air temp indicator

Last Christmas my wife bought me the heated Gerbing jacket, pants, gloves and socks because I like to ride year round if the roads are dry. Have ridden for a few hours at 4 degrees Fahrenheit without issues. Just noticed today that my 2013 F6B's Air Temp Indicator will not show temps below 10 degrees.
At anything below 10 degrees the display just flashes "_ _ _".
Anybody else notice this?

Yes ... that's normal. You are riding in weather out of range for the ambient temp sensor.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.
Guess the air temp does't matter as much as the wind chill anyway!

You will notice over at the bottom of the icon there is a picture of a snowmobile when it gets that cold out-
Is it trying to tell you something?

I do OK with lower temperatures than some of my friends but the city throws down so much salt that I don't want to get it all over my bike and heaven forbid into the electrical connections. I live in an apartment and have underground parking and would love to go out for a spin from time to time. No hose to rinse off the salt after a ride.

Do they only put down sand in your part of the world?

crossbowme

They use calcium chloride pellets and liquid and plenty of sand. Sand doesn't work at all at zero and below though. In any case it eats the he11 out of you machine. Needless to say the road is really exciting with sand on it!:banghead:

When I went out this morning for my daily "coffee run", the thermometer in my car indicated an outside temp of -12*. Don't know what the one on the "6" read, but I didn't care much either.'cold'

Here in NE Ohio the roads get salted for the snow. Usually it gets turned to dust after a few days and the roads dry out. Once the salt dust has a chance to get blown off the roads I am out there on the bike.
Cold doesn't matter as much as clear and dry roads.
Gonna have to check what the wind chill is when it's 4 degrees F. and I'm doing 75 MPH on the expressway.

I found a new wind chill factor and an old one. New says-30, old says -46.
Translated that means colder than a well diggers ass😎

I can't imagine even wanting to ride when it's much below 45*. But, I've been on two wheels for 59 yrs, so that urgency has long passed.

4 degree's this morning here. Much of the northern half of the country is in a serious cold spell now.

Of course (as usual) Maryland DOT has dumped a metric shit ton of salt all over the place and there is no inclement weather requiring it. Nothing but billowing salt dust everywhere... and giant piles of hardened salt everywhere on the roads. :icon_rolleyes:

Bikes are staying in the sheds... that's for sure.

I guess not everyone realizes that lots of places exist where it does not get that cold, ever! Rock salt is only used on margaritas with year round riding and even a very low cost of living so your retirement dollars last longer. No state tax on income and no tax on groceries. Pick up trucks and guns are common and most vote conservative. Some call this the Redneck Riviera. Best beaches anywhere and mountains (AL) and casinos (MS) are close.

Got to pick a good spot, many places it is expensive to live or have other bad things like crime. I like the northern gulf coast myself but some nice places in central Florida also but watch out for the high cost of living. The great mouse and retirees have affected the cost down that way. The good beaches are from Dauphin Island AL to almost Apalachee Bay FL with the best being between Pensacola Beach and Panama City Beach. The temps on the coast on average run lower in the summer and higher in the winter than even a little bit inland. Lots of military bases around here which also helps the economy.

Do all years of the 6 have temp gauges? I've never noticed on my 2015.

With key on press "INFO" button above key for temp readout. Not accurate sitting still with engine hot.

I find the ambient temperature reading on my 2016 B to be pretty worthless. It always reads a good bit higher than the actual temperature in most conditions. Even when cruising down the highway!!! So I almost never check it. The one on my old 2002 Wing was pretty accurate when cruising and there was good air flow over the sensor.

Not a biggie, but when I eventually am doing work at the sensor location I’ll ensure that it is seated properly. Might even get a new sensor to install at that time.....maybe.

Thanks for the info! Will do some checking into the area. Never been that way. Always spent my vacations in Naples and Marco.
Would be nice to see sunshine more often than it is offered here in NE Ohio.

Few inexpensive temp readouts will be on the money correct. Even expensive industrial applications have to check and calibrate often. Honda does have a troubleshooting guide to check the temp sensor and it can be replaced if faulty. I do not think it can be calibrated. So if off a degree or two it should be that way up and down the line so you have to allow for the offset.

Maybe the air temp sensor can be relocated elsewhere, so that it provides a more accurate ambient temperature readout.

Need to look in the manual for it.

Thanks. Pikes Peak on a spring day. Used telephoto lens to bring the snow-covered Peak in close and just the right aperture to have bike in focus and the Peak blurry.

It is supposed to be mounted inside the air duct of the right inner fairing. Don't know if anywhere would be a better spot than that for reading fresh air temperature. No matter where it is you can't stop it from reading heat from the engine if the bike is not moving. I have an aftermarket TI on another bike and it reads about the same as this Honda one, close but not perfect and you have to be moving.

Negative 2 degrees this morning so temp gauge is currently meaningless. Will be in Cancun tomorrow and 80 sounds much better.

You'll never have to worry about me adding to population of the sinking swamp-land southern peninsula of Georgia. With a climate of 8 months of heat and humidity, followed up by a hurricane and then some more humidity. Then once a decade it snows somewhere and the place goes to hell... But that's redundant, since its already there from the last hurricane. Too much traffic, too many old people who can't drive right. It used to be good for orange groves (and I hear not that good for that anymore). There are about three weeks in March, before mean season starts, that seem tolerable before the heat really hits. I've visited relatives at all times of the year down there. I've taken our boat to Tampa and along the ICW and sort of enjoyed that. I donated too many weeks of my salary to the Mouse with the wife and family. I don't golf. I don't sit on the beach without extreme boredom setting in. As far as motorcycling goes, the only place more boring than FL I've been was Kansas (sorry Kansas). Even the GD I-395 HOV lanes outside DC have less traffic than I-95 or I-75. I read a science fiction book recently in which some miracle (caused by climate change / global warming / ocean rising/ whatever!) reduced this swamp/gator/mosquito infested place to a pinky sized ridge of a hills few hundred yards wide and about 1/4 its current length. It can't come soon enough. Except that I would hate for them Fl swamp-dwellers to reintegrate back into the rest of the lower 48. You can keep it.

We've toyed with the idea of moving to Floriduh too for retirement. I do not think that is going to happen though.

Most likely we will find a nice property with acreage in the hills of Tennessee. Wife is actually warming up to that idea. Still have 7 more years to decide.

What's the differences between north and south Florida?
1. Average age of white people increases as you go south.
2. Traffic increases as you get closer to Miami. The drivers are stupid everywhere though.
3. The Latino population gets more Cuban the closer to Miami you get.
4. The redneck population goes up as you go north.
5. Every few years it snows a flake or two in the south and an inch or two in the north, but either scenario causes the same amount of chaos because #2 kicks in.
6. Northern Floridians have more in common with the states that they border on.....and that's not a complement.
7. Northern Florida and the gulf coast are catching up with the south and east coast in all the wrong ways: Population, Pollution, Nasty Traffic, Cost of Living.

Yeah, Florida sucks.

And your point is??? That Houston is better than Key West?

#6 of my list of differences between north and south FL applies, even if Texas does not border FL.

Seriously?

You guys in FloriDUH can't get anything right!

It's only WEST Virginia where brothers and sisters date. Us idiots in Virgina only date our first cousins.

Back home in NY, dating you have to be second cousins. But their breeding is so refined that we got 2 presidents and a first lady as a result. (see Teddy, Franklin and Eleanor).

Differences between Virgin-ia and West Virginia:
1. In Virginia all the hard core uneducated rednecks allowed themselves to get talked into sticking with the Union. The rest of us went with the lost cause. See how that turned out?
2. The School Mascot for UWV is the Mountaineer; VA Tech has the winner of an ugly turkey contest and UVA is a frigging stupid Cavalier, (whatever that is).
3. Dating practices noted above.
4. Virgin-ia gets more crowded, more educated, less mountainous and richer as you go east or north... WVA is just mountainous and poor.
5. WVA is aLOT prettier than VA.

Funny thing here, I actually really like WV.

MAN, you GOT you got to up your State insult game.
