View Full Version : West "Gathering" - Gauging Interest

Hey, just throwing out an idea for a 2020 event on the west side of the Mississippi. Those of us that made the 2018 Cortez event had a good time, and I'd like to see if there is interest in doing something like that again.

What I'm thinking:

3-4 days, open to dates.
Colorado, either the southwestern part of the state, like last year, or somewhere around Denver. The Colorado VTX group ran an annual event out of Lakewood, which is a great spot to launch day trips. Just get together, sniff tailpipes, BS, and ride.
A decent hotel. The Colorado VTX group stayed at the LaQuinta in Lakewood, which has decent parking, great access to roads leading out of town, and a large indoor area to sit around and BS.

This isn't meant to compete with the 2020 Rally on the east side of the country, but offer an option for those that live a long ways from there, and/or prefer the Rockies to the Smokies.

The floor is open for discussion!

I had to cancel Cortez, but I'm in for a 2020 West "Gathering".

If it is Colorado again I'm in Denver and don't think having it down here is that great.....I went to Cortez rally it's nice but loop rides get limited by being in southwest corner. Salida is great area central and rides from there are quite easy. Gold wingers did Montrose one year as well. Just throwing it out there. Just 2 cents from a local.

Montrose, CO is a great place. Has some of the best mountain and canyon riding. I suggested Montrose instead of Cortez but wiser minds that do not know the area went with Cortez. I’ve been to Montrose fir several Valkyrie and GoldWing gathering, plus numerous other summers with friends. Frisco area is also good fir hitting the northern stuff, but Montrose is the best fir great Colorado riding.

If anyone wants to put together something out West, just need to have someone in charge and make some plans.
I would encourage some regional get together s.
I would expect you would probably get between 10 to 20 people. We had a lot of people last time that said they were interested and were coming but did not show, so the numbers at the actual get together were a lot lower.

That would be my vote.

Nah, my idea for this is simply a time and a place for B owners to get together on the west side of the Mississippi. It's not meant to compete with the Labor Day event, and won't have raffles, tents, swag, t-shirts, etc... No offense, as I met you in Cortez and you had all the accoutrements, but that kind of stuff takes too much organizing, IMO. If there is enough interest in the poll here, we'll move on to some potential dates/spots, and go from there.

And I know what you mean by people signing up and not showing up; happens all the time. This might just be me and AzWingRider, and that would still be a good time!

Uh...no, not really. It could be a RTE Grande. Show up, or don't show up.

Precisely why organizing, while with good intentions, doesn't work. IMO

My interest is piqued

I would be very interested in seeing more of Colorado. Did the trip last year and enjoyed it. As long as life deals the cards in favor of going I will be there.

I'm a Florida school teacher so I could only attend if this took place in June, July, or early August. If so barring some kind of emergency I would be there! Rode a full wing from here to Vegas and spent a few days in Colorado and loved it! I too like the idea of a less organized get together, just meet a few people and ride some great roads.

*When you admit your a teacher and make typing mistakes you have to do an edit. Lol!

I am definitely up for such a gathering. Anywhere in the west is good for me. I like the idea of just getting together without a lot of structure. Show up, socialise and ride if you want.

Thanks Jeff for suggesting it

I'm all for a west ride. June? Last time I rode The Bighorns, Bear tooth pass, the Bitterroot ranges, was week 2 and 3 in June. Yup, snow and sleet on every pass I crossed. I think that is common for June. Still had the snowplows going. I pick July or August, hoping for better road surfaces. Not so fun riding in snow, with 1000 yard + drop-offs next to you, and no guard rails.

I would be up for Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota area. Maybe a couple of nights in Cody, Wyoming and a couple of nights in Rapid City, South Dakota area. That would enable us to ride in two great areas that are close together.

As I said in an earlier reply I am up for anything in the west. There are a lot of good riding areas in the Rockies and coastal mountain areas and I am sure there are some owners in those areas that would be able show us great rides that are not well known. I also agree August is probably the best time in the northern Rockies or even the Pacific northwest.

Lets get together and put something together.

It's still open. members can still vote. I believe that there is a "Vbulletin default" expiration after 30 days. I could be wrong.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with Butler Maps but, Idaho Springs, to the East, of Frisco is the center of five of Butlers yellow "best" roads and the highest concentration of red "better" and orange "good" roads in Colorado.

Perhaps your computer is having issues or blocking images?
The poll has been live non-stop since September 3rd.
Once you have voted, you will not be able to see the selections to vote again, those go away.
Unless RickW changed the format of polls? Which I don't believe he did. Everyone should be able to see the details.

But Idaho Springs would not be a good location fir the gathering. Not good for lodging, and too much traffic on I-70 and in the town. I love stopping there for lunch, but try to avoid I-70 if at all possible. Traffic is often stop and go.

This is what you see as a "guest" when you are not logged in , you will not have voting options nor will you see the commencement date or the expiration date of the poll.

I just did a screen capture (on 9-21-19) to show you what you may have seen before.

Both Jeff, (jmdaniel) and Dwight (AZwingrider) are two of the best riding partners you could hope to hang out with. Both willing to set a pace that is brisk and safe at the same time and can cover some beautiful country in a hurry. Dwight has much more knowledge of the roads and restaurants in that area than the average person and makes a really good ride leader. I wish I could come back that way again for this event but time does not allow for the four day travel to and from.

Thanks, big fella. I wish you could make it as well, you're a lot of fun.

Dave, (F6Bster), is helping organize, was at the last rally, and has a ton of maps of the area.

For sure!!! Been riding out of Montrose for 20+ years. It never gets old. Just fabulous riding!!!
It will be fun, plus lots of other Wing riders in town that weekend for Rockies-Gold. So there will be an opportunity to see other Wing friends. I am no longer involved with organizing R-G, but I organized the first two R-G, which were in Montrose, with several hundred very happy riders, including me.

I did meet Dave but we did not ride together. Wish differently! After a few days and one where I went alone for some roads I wanted to check out like Moki Dugway. Dave asked me if I have done the dirt part going up or down and I said both He had a laugh.

It’s always exciting the first time. Love taking people there. Once we were passing through on our way to Zion, but we rode up, and then back down. Lots of fun!

Maybe we’ll still get a chance to ride together one if these days. If not a ride, maybe have a beer in your area. I have good friends in Orange Beach and hope to get back down that way (car trip) — one of these days!

Yep. Been there several times. Bet you guys are having great weather there now. It is Spring in the Rockies, so nice several days, then a day of wet snow, but it doesn't last long. We're on a state-wide Stay-at-Home order, but may have to ride the bike on one of the permissible errands!
