You don't want to live in this part of the country without one. Shelter is in the garage, the door slides on castors, sturdy enough to drive over. You can get into it with a car parked on top. During last years Moore (OKC suburb) tornado, more than 100 people were saved in this type. You have to notify the fire dept. when installed, because more than likely they will have to clear debris off of it to get you out. I think the longest anyone was in one was two hours, but if your house is gone, the only way you will survive these storms is to be below ground. Best $3500 I've ever spent, we have been in it more than a dozen times the last several years. Seats 8.

I have a pit in my garage too.Makes car oil changes easy, I don't know why I never thought about doing what you did.

We had the exact same tornado shelter in our old house we sold last summer...may have to put one in our new house! We never had to get in it but you're right, it's a great thing to have just in case!!
