Garmin GPS Model

OK.. I am looking for a new GPS. I would like to get one with a 5 inch screen. My question is, which 5 inch model will allow me to download created routes?

Philbert40, just about ALL the Garmin GPS's will allow you to download a route from your computer. If you are going to use this on the bike, I would recommend getting a Garmin ZUMO model...as the ZUMO's are waterproof. I have a century old Garmin Zumo 550, and it still keeps working. A used 550 goes for more bucks than a brand new 665 or 660, because of the supply/demand of the 550.

The Zumo 350 is a very good unit, and if you want a 5" screen, then the 665 or 660 are the units to get.

Bama Bagger, after mounting mine in a couple locations, I finally settled on mounting it to the Clutch reservoir, with RAM mounts.

This is the part that mounts to the TOP of your Clutch Reservoir:

Then you want to use the shortest link you can find, which is generaly the 2" link, that connects the ball to ball mounts:

And finally you need the ball mount that mounts to the backside of your Garmin mount:

Now, that is how I did it. You may find a different way to do it, but I am very happy with this method. It mounts the GPS in the correct location for me. It is solid, does not move or vibrate, and can be adjusted to view.

Sorry if this was infor over load....

The Garmin 350 is a very nice unit...I have one...it's selling point is being Blue tooth ...most of Garmin's are... if I had to do it over I am not sure I would go with the 350 only because my Cardo system can't do the 350 and my I Phone at the same time because they use the same blue tooth technology....

Bama Bagger, I must concur with Steve on the use of Sierra Electronics to buy your RAM mounts, as their prices for the exact same items are less money.

Look up those same three parts I gave you info on, and they will save you about $ 10.00 at Sierra Electronics, which can cover the cost of shipping. I have dealt with Sierra Electronics on many occasions, and the guy to ask for is Jeff. Very good knowledge and customer service.

I sold my Garmin nuvi 765t and purchased the Garmin Zumo 660LM. I already installed the Windbender Electric windshield, so I added the Windbender Farkle shelf and mounted my 660 on the shelf. Not the least expensive for sure, but I like having the GPS dead center just below eye level.

Thanks Miles for such solid information. I was thinking of mounting the Garmin on the left side via the Clutch Reservoir and mounting my Adaptive Radar Detector on the Brake Reservoir. Do you happen to have a photo of your mount you could share? I don't want to have to experiment as it appears that you had to.

These pics are of the bike AFTER the lightning strike, but it shows the location of the GPS and the Valentine 1 radar detector.
The bikes is partially taken apart, with weiring hanging out, because I wanted to show the electrical damage to the insurance company.

Bama Bagger, I gave a lot of thought as to where to place those two items. I spend a lot of time in the saddle, and have owned several of these GL-1800 bikes before, with this same accessory equipment. I did not want the GPS or the Radar Detector to be "front and center", as that detracts from my centerline view of the road. These items are "auxilliary accessories", and should be "viewed" as such. That means my primary vision should be ON the road. My secondary vision can be diverted to view one or both accessories, when needed, but be close enough to line of sight, that I am not looking over my shoulder to see one of them.

The way I have them positioned...they do NOT interfere with anything on the bikes dash cluster. I can see every gauge, every light, every switch, and then..immediately off to the left or right of those items, are my GPS and my Valentine 1.

If I had to do it all over again, this is exactly how and where I would mount these.
