View Full Version : Recommendations for rear luggage for long trip?

Hey I was looking for ideas on luggage that would strap down over the passenger seat for a long trip? I don't have a backrest or luggage rack yet (have a standard F6B model).

I really like the streaming looks of sportbike tail bags, but unfortunately they're only large enough to hold maybe a toothpick and a piece of gum ... was hoping to find something in this style, that lays flat, that would be big enough to actually hold stuff:

8236 (http://www.leatherup.com/p/Motorcycle-Tail-Bags/Cortech-Dryver-3.4-Liter-Strap-Tail-Bag/187519.html)

I was hoping to avoid something super tall like this, which looks like it would act like a sailboat sail ...

What do you guys use?

I ordered the BikeMP3 luggage rack:
http://www.bikemp3.com/Touring-Rack-For-F6B-HGW-F6B-TRK.htm

...and the Kuryakyn Gran Trailer Bag:
http://www.kuryakyn.com/products/682/grantraveler-bag

They have not arrived so I cannot render a verdict, but it looked a functional combo.

Cheers,
Steve

I picked up a tourmaster tail bag for less that $100. It can hold three changes of clothing and toiletries. The extra bag on the back held shoes for me and the wife and the saddle bags were full of... refreshments.

I'm 100% right there with you. I want something I can strap onto the back seat area and not a mile high. As U2 would say, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for." But I'll be watching this thread. :icon_wink:

Have you looked at something like this? Firstgear Torrent Waterproof Duffel Bag - 40 Liter Capacity USA-FG-002-40 (On Amazon. I can't get the link copied right for some reason.) I'm thinking that might work as good as anything for what I'm after.

The Tourmaster actually looks pretty good. The video says it's "23 liters" whatever that means and I know from experience I'd like something "30 liters" in size but it's definitely an option worth considering. Who needs that extra pair of jeans or swimsuit? :icon_biggrin:

Thanks!

I use the Kury Gran Tailgater Bag. It's huge and holds a great amount of stuff. It has good solid D-rings and straps that hold it securely on the bike. It has an adjustable lumbar pad to help you use it as a backrest. And when you get there, it has a telescoping handle and wheels so you can just wheel it into the hotel or your home.

I looks awesome but I think is going to be too tall to be unsupported by a backrest. I think we're looking for something a little squattier -- or at least I am.

That's true. I wouldn't try to use it without a backrest.

I've used this bag for 5 years now and it holds (a ton) enough for my girlfriend and I on 10 day trips. Saddlemen has smaller versions if you prefer. If you look at the photos a variety of high quality straps come with the bag for almost any type of seat or luggage rack mounting.

I don't own it yet, but my plan is a Motofizz from Aerostich.

Thanks guys -- those look like great ideas! Taking some notes on sizes and looking around. Will also browse around some local shops here as well, to see what they may have.

I own two, and they are AWESOME. A medium would definitely do the trick for OP. Should be able to secure two points on the grab rails and two points on the passenger pegs.

I use this bag from Saddlemen:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/13857/i/saddlemen-sdp2600-roller-sissy-bar-bag

It has an extension handle and is on wheels so it's versatile and can be used when flying as well. It also has a sleeve which also will fit over more traditional sissy bars. I don't use that of course.

It has a raincover and straps snugly onto the grab handles. I've used it since 2009 on all my trips and it's successfully handled about 15,000+ miles through all kind of weather.

I recently used this Rothco Parachute Bag 24"x15"x13" for a 10 day, 5,381 mile camping trip. $21 to my door. Another $10 to spray it down w/ water repellent. It was my first attempt at motorcycle camping (I had a blast) so I considered it a starter bag. I'm satisfied with the bag for now, eventually I'll upgrade to something more water resistant, reflective and hopefully smaller as I downsize my equipment to just take the minimum.

Mine has the extension handle as well. I really like that convenience.

Value Accessories - Ultragard touring. Its a luggage rack bag, that I suppose goes on the trunk - but fits on my rack pretty darn well, and the price was right as well! $52. Just got in the mail today.

Lots of good options. I'll throw Kriega into the mix: http://www.kriega.us/us30-combo-motorcycle-bags-luggage/

Waterproof. Many sizes available. The bags can be "combo'd" together for custom configurations. Did I say waterproof?

The only thing I don't like is the bag loads like a laundry bag; there's no clamshell lid that opens.

Guess I'm old school. I used a Jeep gym bag on my four days to Las Vegas. Included a costume, too, and had lots of room. Couple of bungie cords and it was on. I have used a carry-on (carrion?) bag for a couple trips. The black bag ties right to the MP3 rack and

For longer trips, I'm with the trailer idea. SO much room, and it sure saved me tons of money as I camped and carried my own cooking stuff.

Another option:

Haven't road-tested it yet as the short MC trips I've been on didn't require anything more than what fit in the s-bags,,,, :icon_frown:

T bag, bike mp3 rack.

+1 Great bag. Extendable handle, wheels, fits perfectly on the MP3 rack and no conflict with the antenna. Rock solid on my adjustable height OEM backrest. Passenger doesn't even know it's back there. Quality all the way on materials, stiching, zippers, etc.

I really like all the luggage ideas that everyone's suggested so far. Thanks for sharing them.

I came across something else to share. To avoid using super large bags, there's also the idea of using thoughtful packing methods to maximize space.

For anyone who's truly attempting to pack a whole month's worth of stuff into a single bag, or taking a true fashionista for a weekend trip (same thing) ... check this guy out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5UlxHsgD58

Some downsides to using that method ....

I'd hate to need "just one tee shirt" on the side of the road
That bag will be HEAVY. If it isn't constructed well, the seams, zipper, or handle might rip. Could also break your luggage rack.
There's not much extra space when you buy that fancy "I went to Sturgis so I'm officially cool now" tee shirt
Could you imagine having to repack that bag every morning after you've stopped?

But then again, it might just be worth it.

Doesn't seem like a viable moto packing technique but it seems fantastic for a situation where you were traveling and then staying for a week and could unpack.

I've used the same Ortlieb dry bag (size medium) for 14 years with no problems. Everything that does fit into the small saddlebags I've had on my KLRs fits in it. And it keeps everything dry. Period. If I don't get some kind of detachable Givi trunk when I get my F6B this spring, I'll keep using it.
