View Full Version : Winter blend gas or real gas - cold engine hesitation

With winter coming on, and the possibility that I will have to park for a week or so due to weather, i started to use all 100% gas over the past month. Now the cold engine hesitation is gone. Not sure if its the real gas or possibly a winter blend in my area.

Any opinions? I will be trying the E-10 for a few weeks to see if the hesitation comes back.

Thanks.

Or maybe it's the cooler weather.

IAT is one of the correction inputs used by the ECM to adjust fuel injector volume...

Good point.

But at least one other person has said temperature\humidity didn't affect their hesitation.

My hesitation seems to have gone away after it got cooler and I'm still using the same gas... so idk.

That would be me.

I have also experimented with premium gas with no ethanol. For the past month I have used only non ethanol gas in anticipation of storing my bike for the 5 winter months. I saw no change in my cold engine surging/hesitation using non-ethanol fuel.

Oh, and to the OP who anticipates a 1 week interlude from riding, and is concerned about fuel separation, welcome to my world of 5 months of layup.

What is this "winter" of which you speak?

Be careful as I heard a "rumor" that Florida and California are going to break off from the mainland and fall into the ocean!!...Just kidding..

I have it on good word that after they break off the would go directly to the south pole 😜

The base layer of limestone here in Florida will just dissolve and we'll become WaterWorld :icon_biggrin:

Yes some bikes in the winter will run lean due to the higher ethanol in the fuels ... stuff is no good , I have resorted to removing ethanol from the fuels I use in my bikes .
If your in a area that has pumps with non ethaol fuel I would use it or buy 5 gallons of fuel foor the winter .

I have never had the hesitation problem you guys are talking about. I only run Premium. Shell or BP.

Have you guys always had this or did it come on gradually with time?

Started at around 2000 miles. Was told by the place i bought it that the issue was caused by bad gas in my area.

Has anyone tried running any Seafoam or Lucas to see if that helped the situation. I dump in some Lucas about every third tank. All we have around here is Ethanol. Left last Saturday morning for a 350 mile ride at 4:30 am. Temps in the high 40's. ran great.

This is an interesting subject. Personally, I'm not really a fan of any sort of additive in the oil or fuel. I made it a point to ONLY use Shell with V-tech and that's the only fuel I've had in my bike. After 100,000 miles or so, I'm gonna pull the heads and see if this V-tech stuff actually keeps valves and combustion chambers clean :icon_cool:

I also read somewhere that throttle bodies (some?) have a micro coating that intake cleaners may dissolve... so I'm hesitant to use Seafoam in there too.
