Closest call I ever had today.

Pickup truck came from a side street from my right several hundred yards in front and turned left to oppose me. He then proceeded to turn left into a 'stop n rob' within seconds, turning directly into me. Amazing how the human brain can slow everything down in the split second of adrenaline rush and oh shit!. The first millisecond it began happening my initial thought was there is no way to avoid this, I am going to crash. There was no exit left or right. Gas pumps to the right and a ditch to the left with an oncoming car. Microseconds later instincts take over and you begin to react. First move was off throttle and hard on rear brake, no front brake. If I had pulled the clutch it would have been a crash. I was a bit hard and locked up the rear for a millisecond and began a small slide to the right. My brain immediately let off knowing that it would result in a slide and crash. The F6B is so nice, she righted herself like a viagra erection. Rear brake and no clutch bled a good 10-15 mph which was just enough to go behind the pickup and between his ass and the car he cutoff behind him when he entered the road initially. I had maybe a foot of clearance on either side. I am pretty damn impressed with how that 1000# was able to slow and maneuver so nice. I don't know if my Yamaha cruiser could have pulled that off. Thanks Mr. Honda, you kept an angel out of heaven today.

I know the feeling, only I caught the very last part of the pickup and high sided. Not fun. Many years ago and on a less maneuverable v-twin cruiser. I have way more confidence in the B.

Seriously, though... glad yer still with us. I've learned to ride as if every cage driver on the road is blind and stupid and out to get me. Ride with that attitude and you'll continue to avoid and evade situations like this.

I've had many a close call over the years. 4 years ago on my Valk, I had a guy in a pick up truck pull right out in front of me. I literally slid it under his bumper with no actual contact with his truck. Inches. The weight of big bikes is what I have always considered more of an issue with an inexperienced rider than power. Knowing what to expect and how your bike is going to behave in a panic situation. Having a good grasp of how to brake, maneuver and that the throttle can be your biggest ally when you combine all these correctly.

Just glad you are safe and still here to tell this. Of course we never know what will happen but this will reinforce again my cautious driving as I often ride with my son. Cannot even imagine if something would happen

I have only been in one wreck ( knock on wood) even though it was the first time and hopefully the only time I knew exactly what to do even though I had never been in that situation before. I was on the blue Ridge Parkway and the road turned and unfortunately I did not. I separated my self from the bike and rolled letting the bike continue on. I got up shook myself off and proceeded to yell every obscenity I could untill the rest of the group caught up with me. We dug the bike out still in rideable conditions and hopped back on after a few minutes I went into shock and that was less than pleasant had to pull over immediately and wait for a tow. It bruised me up bad but it hasn't kept me from riding.

Riding down to the ROT Biker Rally in Austin 13 years ago, a car came out from between two semi trucks and ran me into the ditch between north and south bound I35. I was running about 80 on a Harley Road King. Rode the ditch about 100 yards until the engine guard dug into the side of the v shaped ditch. The witnesses said the bike went end over end three times. I don't remember much until the bike came to a stop with the air cleaner burried into my calf. I worked myself out from under the bike and surveyed all my extremities and everything worked including my helmetless head. Got checked out by the paramedics and Texas Highway Patrol. An Abbot Texas Police officer and I pulled the fender off the front tire and bent the handlebars back in place as best we could. I Took off and completed my trip to Austin. My leg was really sore for about a week but no other injuries.. I was no faulted by my insurance company because of police reports and witnesses and they paid about $8000.00 to rebuild my Road King.

I was extremely fortunate but have owned and ridden 4 more motorcycles since that event. They have reworked that streatch of interstate in the past few years and I am quite sure I would be a fatality if that accident occurred now. They have installed concrete barriers between the north and south bound lanes right where my escape path was at the time. Those things my be good to keep cars appart but can be real dangerous for motorcycles.

We have concrete barriers and cables in AZ. I cringe thinking about what would happen if I ended up in the cables.

When they first started putting them up I was like, WTF? I guess they save alot of money over concrete but most of the time the cars slip right under the cables anyway. I'm sure it's rare for bikers to end up there, but now we know it can happen.

Glad to hear the 6 got you out of a jam Stro. When I'm in traffic I ride constantly with the horn button covered. If someone does pull out in front of me or move into my lane without seeing me, I give a good long blast just to imprint the impression of a motorcyclist trying to get their attention. (and what a fantastic horn we have!)

I wish I had a story to tell, but glad that I don't. I hate to admit this... but my closest calls have been of my own doing, and even at that, I've been lucky and have nothing at all that stands out in my mind.

I keep my thumb poised whenever I'm in traffic, also. And yes, we do have a great horn! If I'm not mistaken it's a hi/low two horn set similar to most cars.
I admit I was surprised the first time I pressed that button. But I've certainly used it on more than one occasion. Kudos to Honda for giving us the horns we deserve.
