View Full Version : Questions about a rear rack I found...

...on wingstuff.com I am thinking of purchasing it. Does anyone have experience with it?

http://i58.tinypic.com/w2p11e.jpg

1. The width of the rack is 18" wide. When I measured 18" on the rear of my new F6B, it looks like the rack would "just clear" the right rear mounted antenna. Is this true?

2. Do you think that the rack and the way that it is mounted on the F6B will safely carry/support a full case of beer?

Thanks in Advance!

I saw that too. I opted for the tubular design by Show Chrome because it looked like it would be easier to attach bungie cords and I was afraid of the bungie cords might scratch the black color off. Not sure if my concerns are real or not.

I just purchased one from a member but haven't received it yet, I can let you know, I know several on here have them though.

FWIW, the black chrome tube rack looks really nice on the 2015 matte gray bikes.

I choose this one over all the rest. It's heavy duty and wide, but will not interfere with the antennae. There are four (4) mounting points on bottom of the rack for bungie straps. I will send pictures of it mounted on my bike tomorrow. Too dark outside now.

I have both. I like the tubular when I'm traveling with the backrest on. I like the looks of the one you're looking at from Wingstuff the best. They both work & fit well. I think I bought mine thru MP3 then Value accessories for the tubular black Chrome.

The answer to your most important question is yes, it will support a full case of beer. Mine did.

I bought that rack from MP3/Wingstuff and have it installed. I haven't had to carry a box of beer yet but a Kuryakyn Classic Tour Bag does fit nicely without interfering with the antenna. Just can't extend (2") the right side of the bag because of the antenna. I suppose you could relocate the antenna to the centre/rear of the rack if you were keen enough for a different look.

The rack clears the antenna by a full inch.

I think the MP3 rack looks great, especially in black on the black bike.

The only thing that didn't come with the rack was fitting instructions, but once you compare the 'bits' with what's on the bike it soon becomes apparent how it goes on. Be aware that the plastic trim that is replaced by the piece with the 2 holes for the mount is held in place by a small screw at the rear....don't try and prise it off.

Do you have to relocate the antenna for the show chrome rack?

That is an interesting looking rack. I didn't see that one...

...albeit my questions have been succinctly answered. :icon_cool: Thanks all!

After my first weekend trip this weekend, I'll probably decide to get that black chrome style one. Best place to buy one? And it does work with factory passenger backrest right?

We have sponsored vendors, Rick at Value accessories sells that rack for about $130. Check out the links to our sponsors on the home page.

I reached the same conclusion. Plus there was a comment somewhere saying that style of rack had bent under load. I have the Show Chrome smoke colored on my black B and like the looks.

I now have the rack installed that I initially queried about; for this thread. I am more than satisfied with it. It's a flat black finish; so if it ever gets "beat up" it's easy to pop it off and hit it with a rattle can to renew it.

Has little "tits" underneath where you can wind a bungee cord around.

I think the rack is a perfect shape and fit for the back of the F6B. And there is no way that this particular rack is going "to bend". Unless maybe you stand on it's trailing edge... any rack will bend under that weight

I'm confused. Will, in his thread, he states it was the BikeMP3 rack that was bending and another poster seconded that his was bending. Your pics appear to be the same rack.
If yours isn't that rack, could you please provide the part number and brand of your rack.. thanks!

I have the MP3 rack, like Will's, and am very happy with it. Very strong - no bending - and have loaded it up with quite a few heavy loads. Mine has scratched a bit, but I do carry a metal briefcase on it three or four times a week. Would think that it would take quite a bit to make it bend.

I have had the MP3 rack on for quite a while and have loaded it down pretty good-I know way more then 6 lbs worth and it has not bent.I really don't see how one could bend this rack unless all the wieght was only on the rear curved portion of the rack?

You are right. It is a MP3 rack that I have... same as the thread that Shooter had mentioned.

Glancing at the picture in the other thread Shooter referenced... the picture of the #2 post depicts the Custom Chrome rack that he had installed... and represented as bent down.

That post was what I went off of.... not of his claim in post #1 that the MP3 rack has also bent on him. There is no picture of the MP3 rack being bent. No pictures... no proof of that.

However I would still like to state that I do not see how the MP3 rack could bend like that. It's rated for 6 pounds but I have carried bungee'ed suitcases of beer on mine (24 to 36 cans) with no ill effects.

If your are really piling on the cargo (I'm talking about 50 pounds+) ...and from the way that most of the rack is extended out from the 4 bolt points; I imagine it could theoretically start to bend. I've never planned to carry that much on the rack in the first place though. This is a motorcycle... not a pickup truck. :icon_wink:

Yeah and Will I didn't even read the whole post I just mentioned it for reference. Never owned an MP3 rack. I'm sure if you say its good it is. I don't know what the other guys issues were. I just remembered seeing the post.

Will, how was it for ease of installation? A couple of reviews on Wingstuff say that they couldn't install it without doing modifications. I'm hoping that it can be installed on the Honda rear carrier / backrest attachment.

No problem, Will. I have the bikemp3 rack on order through Wingstuff and should get it on Friday. Looking forward to getting it installed.

I agree that if most of the weight is bearing down within the 4 mounting posts area, there shouldn't be a problem with bending.

Thanks,

It's not hard to install at all. I am mystified as to why others may have reported a problem installing it. You simply remove the four Honda backrest mounting bolts; place the four bolt risers onto the backrest bracket holes; and then place the luggage rack on top of them; line everything up and insert the four new (longer bolts) and tighten everything back down.

nice rack! ANyway- I found this on another seller site. Maybe it answers the "mods necessary for installation question- You are BOTH right.:

If the bike does not have the factory backrest, you will be required to drill 4 holes in the existing cover plates on the rear plastic bodywork. Or, you can use the Honda rack mounting system that comes with predrilled cover plates. The Honda part numbers are 08L73-MJG-670ZA for red cover plates or 08L73-MJG-670ZB for black cover plates.
