View Full Version : Good place for a magnetic key holder?

I ordered a magnet key holder, and it arrived today. Any suggestions for a good spot on the bike? I thought the top of the fork under the fairing would be a good spot, but then I thought, perhaps not.

My personal choice for bike, car, etc...is to locate a discrete place and use a zip-tie to secure it in place....when needed just cut it off.

I am always able to find a place totally out of view so that only I know where it is.

+1... not a lot of metal on this bike in the places where you could hide a key... pull the left side cover and bury a key in there somewhere....

I have the short keys for the center cubby and gas door. My cubby key is designed to also work in the bag lock. I keep my spare ignition key hidden in the saddle bag. As others have noted a key zip tied by the battery is a good idea.

Wouldn't you need to open a saddlebag to remove the side cover? Unless you have a cubby key for your saddlebags, you'd be out of luck.

Good call forgot about haveing to open the saddle bag. Move forward one cover. Make it easy to remember. Put it behind the cover where you check / add oil on the right.

Not a fan of this. Zip ties can be a bytch to cut. I've seen too much damage caused by the knife when it slips after the cut. Just sayin.

Guess this wouldn't work. Could put it on the passenger seat.

You could always throw some nail clippers in the left pocket....

That's a great idea, Larry...soooo, what have you done with the other 49 if your zip tie is reusable? How about if we all send you an quarter and a self addressed envelope? Would you send us each one?

I'm just kiddin. I've got plenty of zip ties and I can always carry a small pair of sidecutters. I do like the idea of reusaables, though.

You should check a product called Velcro. It's awesome.

That was fourth grade and you know it. They left you out of the yearbook because of that picture where you was cranking your middle finger up.

I ZIP tie a key on all of my vehicles .... use the eyelet of the key, tie it to the same area on all of your vehicles and you'll always know where a spare key is located.

It's very EASY to remove the key ... Just twist the key multiple times until the plastic zip tie snaps, I've done it and it works. No need for a knife or scissor. Return key to secret location with a new Zip Tie.

Twisting requires manual dexterity or in other words the ability to make coordinated hand and finger movements to grasp and manipulate objects and while shooter's mechanical abilitys are legendary in his own mind they are in no way proof he has the manual dexterity required to twist a key to get a zip tie apart.:poke:hiding.under.chair

I am in reference to the engine cover and not the side cover....Perfect area !!!

I had a new key copied for $4 - it will not start the bike but will open the saddle bags, gas tank and cubby. I sawed the top off of it, painted it flat black, and now leave it in the bike with the saddles bags permanently in the open position. I got tired of having to unlock them everytime and continually leaving my keys just hanging there. Now I can hide a real key in the gas cap or cubby and just pull this one out to quickly get at it. Needless to say, you don't need to leave the key in your bike. You can put the copy in your wallet.

The problem I see is that I find an excellent place to hide it, but then a year down the road I forget where that spot was! Heck with a year tomorrow I'd forget I had a Spare! :yikes:
