View Full Version : Air filter replacement

Since i have all of the bodywork off the bike, I decided to upgrade to a K&N air filter. At that point I was only at the beginning stage. Sometimes you just have to scratch your head at the way some of these bike are engineered. It is as almost someone started with a filter and designed a bike around it. The rest of the shelters, air ducts, ECM and the top of the air box still stood in the way. You would think for a maintainace item, they would make it more accessible. And of course, I lost a 8mm socket down the outside of the air box. Hopefully it finds a firm place to stay on top of the engine. I see nothing that moves in there, so I should be ok.

Yep....that is Honda's way of laying the wood.....

There's a vid on you tube of the whole process. Doesn't look like a whole lotta fun, but depending on how much one rides, it may only be a once a year kind of event.

How often does the manual say to replace the filter?

I guess Honda figured the dealers service departments could use the work since most of the bike is otherwise maintenance free.

There might be a lotta thruth in that statement, it sure seems that way at least

done a few of em -- man what a pain for a filter -- mine is NOT getting changed unless I know it is dirty (changing time/miles wise the few I have done came out looking almost new)

also I think we charge like 2 hours or less to change it -- I guess you could get to that point eventually but the 1st one I did took me 4+ hours and that's with the book telling me how to get there. so, there's no great profit in it for the techs

That is the reason I change them at 25k. No problem on any GL1800. Still looked good when removed. F6B should be a tad faster as there is less stuff on top of filter.

I change mine every 25000 miles as well always look pretty clean,
change some at 40000 miles just a little more than 50 percent block,
it all depends on the air quality as to how long the filter life would be,
and it is not a bad job after your first or second time or if you forget to
plug up something then it real quick job I forgot this magnetic socket
can be you best friend on small screws I use them daily at work.

And that...is the reason why I change my OEM air filter AND the original spark plugs at 25,000 miles....and install a K&N air filter, and NGK Iridium spark plugs, so that I do not have to do either of those again until the bike hits 100,000 miles on it. I am VERY comfortable with leaving the K&N air filter and the NGK Iridium spark plugs in this bike for a total of 75,000 miles. Done it 3 times already on previous 1800 Wings, and I will do it again on this bike. :icon_mrgreen:

Miles you're on my wavelength on this. K&N...used on aircraft, cages, motorcycles, start out in life passing slightly (~3%) more fine doo than paper. Eventually they match paper's flow, and eventually they flow better than paper can while offering reasonable service intervals (via stacked debris vs plugged paper).

Ok, you got me on the Iridiums vs standard. They're my next changeout.

Yep! TONS of brake dust and pollution here in Houston. Air filters all have a fine black powder on em,,, YUMMY!!!!

I wonder if it'd help any to have an oiled foam pre-filter over the air box intakes? Any easier to service between main filter change outs? The ATV's (Polaris) and dirt bikes I had used them effectively it seemed.

I assume those are the two inlet tubes...be easy to put a foam pre-filter (http://www.google.com/search?q=foam+pre+filter&client=safari&rls=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=yQMQUo6BNsPmyQH0kYBI&ved=0CGQQsAQ&biw=1617&bih=918)over each. Might prolong the inevitable main filter replacement.

There are separate scoops. Here are the 2 scoops removed from the bike:

The 'do it yourself' air filter change vids/threads I see are Gen 1 GL1800. Example:

http://www.scrc412.com/smf/index.php?topic=1157.0

Tons of electronics above the airbox. (Cruise, ECM, etc)

Anybody have a vid of air filter replacement on a 2nd Gen GL-1800?

(Partzilla has the scoops shown on a 2012 GL,,, R and L "air ducts",, $50 each,,,ouch)

I'll have to examine the feasibility of a pre-filter setup this winter.

What a pain in the a$$. Changed mine last night. Dealer says they can do it in 2 hours. It took me about 5. Still not sure I could do it in 2 after this experience. Like others, I went to K&N so I don't have to do it again for a while. On a side note, the Mustang seat is much easier to put back on than it was the first time. What the hell was Honda thinking?

Here is where the filter is located:
8048
This is what you take off to get to it:
8049
This is the stock filter with 22000 miles:
8050
The condition was not that bad.

Think a F6B is a pain? Try doing a Goldwing with airbag!

I just had my seat, grab rails, top cover, etc etc all off to install the passenger backrest. I should have changed the air filter while I was at it. But with only 1600 km on the bike, perhaps not:icon_rolleyes:

It would have been a good time to install a K&N so you would not have to go back into the bike for a long time. My next maintenance items are spark plugs and shaft oil. Those tasks are fairly simple especially after the air filter.:icon_biggrin:

Not sure what you mean by this Texas TC. The only upside to having a K&N is the fact that
it's guaranteed for 100,000 miles of use and it's washable. It will get equally as dirty as the OEM filter in the same amount of time.

Not sure if you were close. If your 6 did not look like the pics I posted you had a lot more stuff to remove to get near the filter box .batman-smilie.

Still have 4k till d-day but just thought I would throw my 2 cents in air and oil filters are the life line cheap protection.
I have changed air filter once every year on all my bikes you don't want to see it BLACK! Not looking forward to it but
every accessory has been a 10 min job. I think I will add cc at time for filter.:yikes:

Don't get me started. I will NEVER install a K & N in anything. I like having my intake air thoroughly filtered.

I run K&N in everything I own. On my Harley's, I got 40,000 miles before cleaning them and that was usually just routine maintenance. Guess time will tell on the F6B. Just glad that task is behind me for a while. Now it is on to changing plugs and shaft oil. Those requirements are certainly easier than the air cleaner.
