I have been working my way up to riding my 50 miles each way commute to work only riding in full gear. It is damn tough in the St Louis heat this Summer. It was still 94 degrees on the way home last night and Summer is now over. I have just bought a set of Klim riding gear that is very good for protection, comfort and flowing air. So I have got the jacket, pants, boots and gloves now that I will wear on the highway. The last piece is the full or modular helmet.

I bought a Schuberth C3 Modular Helmet on sale last winter and it is very nice but after and hour I get a little crazy and can not tolerate the full helmet especially in the heat.

I bought a Scorpion 3/4 with a full face shield. It has a lot of turbulence and wind noise that I can only wear it without the face shield or the pull down sun visor. It feels odd after a short time when I wear sunglasses with it.

I bought a Bell Pit Boss and it feels great just like a Harley 1/2 helmet. It may provide a little better protection but I don't really think it is much safer than the Harley 1/2 helmet.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help me tolerate the full helmet. I feel like am riding a lot of highway miles and my number could come up so I want to be as safe as possible.

I just love the feeling of the 1/2 helmet with the wind in my face. I feel like the full helmet is taking away from the motorcycle experience. I try to rationalize it in my head saying that I am safer with the 1/2 helmet because it gives me more visibility. This visibility of the road will prevent me from getting in an accident. The most important thing is never to get in an accident in the first place. But we all know that if we do get in an accident most of the time it will not be our fault.

Please help me!!!

That is an issue a lot of us have. Helmets are a touchy subject that most wont even argue. I wear a half helmet in the hot temps and a full in cooler weather but that's me. My issue with full helmets is a pain that they cause just above my forehead that is killing me after a couple of hours must be my head shape as all healmets cause it. Full helmets need great airflow to keep cool and if you have changed the stock windscreen you limited the airflow. Sorry I don't have a better answer for keeping your cool....

The Schuberth has very little if no air flow. I think that is why it is so quiet. It hits me hard in the forehead also.

Open the face shield on the F/F and then use the drop down eye visor or shades if you got them (to protect your eyes)...

White helmets also are seemingly cooler. Dark colors will absorb heat.

It has been about 10 years since I've researched full faced helmets but when I did, Arai and Shoei had the best air flow / head cooling systems. Shoei was too round for me (didn't fit) so I went with a very expensive Arai ($700 ish if I remember correctly).
If I'm ever smart enough to wear a full faced helmet again, I'd happily buy another Arai.

The helmet I wear and love in the hot summer days is the HJC IS-Cruiser helmet it has a pull down clear windscreen that retracts nicely into the helmet and can be pulled down to divert some of the bugs from hitting your eyes and face.23150
it also comes in 6 different colors. Love this helmet and don't go out in the heat without it. You can get one without spending a fortune in price. I also have a full face HJC and never thought they were not up to the task at hand as they are very well built helmets.

I wear a full-face without the face shield and a windshield that pushes the wind over my head. Pulling down the faceshield makes me feel very closed in.

I agree Luke. This SHARK will probably be my next helmet but the OP may still not find the turbulence in the 3/4 configuration to his liking.

I ride with a full-face year round in Florida and what you need is air-flow. I use a mid priced ICON Airmada. It has decent size vents plus a little space around the padding for airflow and it is pretty open on the bottom around your neck. Not the quietest ride but air can flow out the same way noise gets in...make sense? I also use a lighter color reflective shell and dark tint face shield (think tinted car windows) to keep from frying in a fish bowl. In fact one of the things that stopped me from purchasing a SHARK was the clear only face shield. It helps to keep the shield cracked open a little too. Hope this helps.

I think I just need to adjust the Madstad???? or put my F4 Customs back on and see how I like it.

How do you guys run yours? I have mine all the way down and all the way back towards me (I think)

If I have my Madstad all the way down, I receive too much buffeting on the highway. It doesn't matter if it is tilted forward, back, or in the middle; down = buffeting for me. I run mine about half-way up most of the time. If it is extra buggy or chilly then I'll move it all the way up to get a little more protection since I ride with a half helmet. Half way up is adequate to eliminate buffeting at highway speeds for me.

Maybe that's the issue. I run a 1/2" under stock shorty tint screen so I get the breeze to my helmet.

I have been battling this exact same issue all summer. I always wear a full face helmet, currently a Scorpion, but the extreme heat this summer finally got to me and I purchased a Scorpion modular. The modular allows me to get some air at stoplights, more air as I am moving slow through parking lots, and I can also grab something to drink while on the bike. I find with both helmets that I ride with the face shield up most of the time. I do wear a pair of slightly tinted sunglasses which provides eye protection and allows me to get some air while riding. If we are rolling at a fast pace I will drop the built in sun visor down and that prevents more air from hitting my face. This past summer I welcomed the air hitting my face. Of course this is all contingent upon the position I have my Madstad in. Full face , modular, Madstad up, down, forward ,back, it's seems to be an ongoing experiment with me.
For those of you that are experiencing "hot spots" in your helmets, here is what I have done. I was getting a "hot spot / burning sensation on the top of my forehead after about an hour of riding. This was with all three of my helmets. I took one of my helmets and removed the top liner (mine are washable so they can be removed) I could easily see the foam lined shell. I determined as best I could where the "hot Spot" was on the inside of the helmet. I then took a softball and rolled it on the foam with a little bit of pressure. :yikes: Installed liner back in helmet and all is good.( Now I know I will probably get flamed and accused of destroying the integrity of the helmet, but I believe compressing the foam in one particular spot a 16th of an inch where it digs into my forehead will not matter much in the big picture of a crash) Just my opinion whether it's right or wrong. I am now able to wear it for hours without any burning on my forehead. I have since done it to my other two helmets and the results have been the same. :shhh:
Sorry I got of topic there. Bottom line for me is I prefer a full face helmet but ride most of the time with the shield up. Having the built in sun visor is even more convenient.

Really doesn't look like it would channel enough air past your ears to cool anything in extremely hot weather. The price is 3 time what my HJC IS-Cruiser helmet sells for. All helmets have to meet a standard to be out there for sale and applications vary for sure. A full face helmet is for cooler weather and so is a full helmet and the HJC IS Cruiser is for hot weather and works well in that scenario.

I probably run my helmets a size larger than recommended...it's the only way I've found to be comfortable. With my full face I run with the visor cracked most of the time otherwise it's claustrophobic feeling. Been running HJC's for years.

I have always bought HJC's as well. And I had been running them for quite some time at a larger size than necessary, until one day a salesman at a bike shop explained to me I needed a large instead of an X-Large. Now I don't feel too much like the pumpkin head I used to be. My wife may disagree with me though... :icon_mrgreen:

THE SHARK EVOLINE IS A BIT EXPENSIVE---However, as I get older the determining factors in helmets are comfort and WEIGHT! Many of the full face and modular helmets are very heavy. I have found that the Bell 500 and Kubota Advant are very light for the mass. I also have a Vega Full Face Carbon Fiber that is lighter than most half helmets---less than 3 lbs if I remember correctly. However it is not well vented. Many that are vented are noisy.

I guess what I am swaying is that comfort needs to be figured into the equation when purchasing. Helmets I really loved--but could not wear are Nolan (because of the fit) and HJC because of the weight. Strangely enough, Bilt (from Cycle Gear) has some very affordable lightweight comfortable lids at a very good price if you can catch them on sale.

I have been considering the Nolan N44 Outlaw. I have owned a couple Nolan's over the years. This looks to have plenty of air flow.

I have decided to use my new (last December) Schuberth C3 modular helmet. I will try and use it most of the time which has been my goal for a long time now. I can adjust the Madstad up higher to my nose level when needed or down all the way and I am happy with it now.

---------------------------------------------------

With the Madstad windshield up to where it is even with my nose:

I can wear my Schubert C3 with the modular part up over my head and either sunglasses or the drop down visor at 80 mph + with no buffeting, strong wind push back, or noise.

I can wear my Scorpion 3/4 with full face shield down.

----------------------------------------------------

With the Madstad windshield all the way down: (my preferred location for best view over the shield / looks)

I can run the Schuberth C3 with the modular part down, clear face shield up, and the black tinted visor down with no problems. It does not have any buffeting and can provide comfort in up to 80 degree heat.

I can wear my Scorpion 3/4 with the full face shield removed.

I can wear my Bell Pit Bull or my HD 1/2 helmet.
