Here are a few pictures of the BBP backrest on my Mustang seat. I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I will post a thread on the install as soon as I find time.

Nice.

No pressure, but, Please do the install instructions asap!! I'm sure there are many of us here that have Mustang seats and have been waiting for this most needed modification.

Great job!! Looks factory.

just curious, did you follow another member here "dickiedeals" who put a Utopia in a Mustang? I was going to attempt the job myself also, but got a good deal on a Corbin and went that way.

I did use his thread but made some changes. I did not have to cut down the backrest pad on the BBP backrest. I moved the opening in the seat forward 3/4" and I purchased a piece of flat stock for extending the top bar 1".

This is from his Tread:

Mustang Seat, Utopia Rider Backrest Conversion

Because Many have asked while I was down with Rotor Cuff Surgery I'm sharing this info for those brave soles that feel they can do it. You are on your own, Continue at your own risk....Check your measurements...

The Utopia upright mount must be made 5/8”s longer. Its overall length should measure 4 5/8”s when complete The 5/8” can be cut off of the curved bottom bracket and welded to the upright,Cut the tongue with the two threaded holes in it off the Upright bracket, weld the 5/8" piece on the bottom of the upright, then weld the tongue back as it was. The rest of the utopia directions are the same except the cut in the seat must be 17 5/8” from the rear most point of the seat. Be sure and paint it so it doesn't rust. This is for the fixed bracket that comes stock with the Utopia. If using the removable back rest bracket I’m pretty sure it must also be made 5/8” longer. I was going to do the conversion again taking photos as I went but didn't have time before surgery. As for the Back rest reconstruction, I’ll cover that at a later date............Dickie

Nice!

I don't mind cutting my way thru a stock seat, but I don't know if I'd have the nerve to cut into that pretty Mustang seat:yikes:

I would only change one thing, and this is just a personal preference...and that would be to install the Ultimate seat passenger backrest riser. Even if you don't ride with a passenger, I think it would just give it a more balanced look...its the only reason I did it to mine.

If interested, you can scroll down this link and get an idea of how it looks.

I have had some request to post steps on installing the smart mount backrest. I am leaving on a ride tomorrow and will return on Sunday. I hope to post steps then. I would recommend down loading the instruction from Wingstuff on installing the backrest on a OEM seat http://wingstuff.com/system/uploads/pdf/000/023/364/original.pdf?1386279724. Soon as I can I will post my measurements.

Very nice !!! That mustang seat is a very good looking seat. How is the comfort? The stock seat is not very good to say the least.

I like it. I can't compare it to the stock seat not having rode on one. It is firm but after 300 miles in the saddle I felt I could have rode another 200 miles with out hurting.

For the ones who asked about using the Smart mount backrest on your Mustang seat here are the measurements. I'm sharing with you what I did you are responsible for your modifications. As the above quote states first down load and read the oem instructions on mounting the smart mount backrest. You can find these on Wing Stuff. The only modifications I made was to the arm of the backrest by adding 1" of flat stock. In the picture below you can see the piece I added was a little over 1" and I had to cut some off for it to work. It will bottom out on the off set in the seat. I measure 18 1/4 " from the rear tip of the seat and made the cut into the seat (first mark was the 17 5/8" from rear [measurement used for the Utopia backrest mod] second 18 1/4"). I measure the cut on the stock seat were I removed the smart mount and it is 18" from rear. The oem instructions or right on for the rest of the install. I did make a cover for backrest bar out of some leather using a couple of snaps.

Modifications: Weld 1" piece of flat stock to backrest bar. Place bar into place and mark using the holes drilled in seat. Drill bar and tap for bolts.
Note: Careful drilling through bottom of seat you can drill into the seat cover.

I hope this will be helpful.

Thanks Crazyhourse. I know every seat will vary in measurments but just to be clear, you measured and cut the slot 18 1/4" from the rear of the seat. What is the 17 5/8" measurment for?

The member that did the Utopia backrest mod used the 17 5/8" measurement (I used his post to do my install and had to make some changes). I can see how it could be confusing if you did not read this entire post. I may edit that from my post.

I'm the reshaped Utopia Guy...I have not been on in awhile due to health issues and life.
I'm Dickie, I put the Utopia on my Mustang Seat. I'm glad one of you pulled my measurements from somewhere because I'd forgotten them..Its fairly easy to figure out without the numbers as I did the first time.A little unnerving poking a knife through you're expensive Mustang Seat...The biggest expense was getting a new cover made for the reshaped back rest..I was going to create a reshaped back rest kit with all the brackets and covered pad so I could share a direct bolt on kit for interested members. The local upholstery guy charged me $80 bucks and told me it was a major pain in the A to do that he wasn't interested in doing anymore..That put the kabash on my refitted Utopia back rest kits for the Mustang seat. I even got Utopia's and Mustangs permission .. Even talked with Mustang about making a back rest for the seat and was told the seat didn't need a back rest, there would be no market for it...Considering the cost of the Utopia Back rest plus the $80.00 recover it's relatively costly. Worth it to me for no more back ache..........Shortly after I got sick and that was that... Heart problems, Prostate issues, Diabetic nerve issues and then Skin Cancer..Surgeries,treatments.etc. I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.....Dickie'all/right'
