Did that "nose wheel got nothing" maneuver many times with CH-53Ds and CH-53Es - at altitudes which a 46 would perish.
Even hovered an MH-53J Pave Low at 10,000 feet just because!
The Phrog was a great machine in its heyday...but not so much since 1969. And yes, I have over 100 hours in Phrogs.
Happy 239th Birthday, MSGT!

I delivered a few MH-53Js and a TH-53A to Kirtland and even took some training out there on the differences between Js and Ds. Most notably the Moving Map (kinda) and the TF/TA system and everything else attached to the #4 Rectifier which the D didn't have. Cool bird. Thanks for your service - the avi on these things wasn't trivial.
Cheers,

I was the best guy they had on the APQ158 TF/TA radar. Had a knack for it as an A1C and made a name for myself :)
Went TDY one time up to Hill AFB, the pilots let me ride in the FE seat and demonstrated the different modes on the radar from the air (including E^2)? and we flew towards a canyon wall until the climb bar jumped. Scared the crap out of me, made me realize how much faith pilots put into the electronics that they let 20-year old kids fix; that was daytime, and I know the typical MO for those crews was to ride in the dark with NVG's and lights out -- all instruments.
Tons of respect for the drivers and crews. Aim High and thanks for everyone's service
