Will be riding down with John (jm21ddd15). Going to spend a few days in Ohio on the windy9 before the rally.
I don't think Pumper has plans of making the rally this year.
Very loosely planning the trip to CO. I am looking at roughly the NOLA-Dallas-Lubbock-Albaquerque-Cortez line of travel. I may do a mix of interstate and non-interstate roads, depending on when I leave. Does anybody have advice on must see spots along that route? I've never been out that way.
I would not waste any time on anything until getting to at least to northern New Mexico and by then you are almost there. Take a look at Google Earth or even better Google Maps in satellite view.
I would suggest just west of Santa Rosa New Mexico exit I-40 onto highways 84 and 518 to Taos New Mexico and then Us-64 through Chama New Mexico to Pagosa Springs Colorado and finally Us-160 to Cortez. There are some great roads on this route and in Chama they have the narrow gauge steam train that is definitely worth a look.

Just made my reservations. All ready to go. I'm going to start packing tonight.
TailGunner and JJ booked for Cortez
Time to start getting excited.
I will pre check hotel on 4/25. I'm staying there on my way to Laughlin. About half way for me.
Let us know what you think, and find a place for the AM meal.
Reservation made. Possibly bringing 2 guests/riders.
Currently in Cortez at Super 8. If you're particular or bringing someone who is you might want to check out another place. Parking isn't great due to not being able to see bike and rooms are eh. Gas, food, drink within walking distance is a bonus but most hotel/motels are in this town. Lots of "wellness" shops so stock up on brownies while you're here.
Thanks for the update. I was concerned about that Super 8. At those rates, it had to be on the lower end of the scale. The rate is good, but I guess I fit in the "bit particular" group. I like a nice, clean place, and it must have a really good bed for my back. I had looked earlier at other locations, but that time of the year they are all pretty expensive as lots of tourists going to Mesa Verde stay in Cortez. I'll be starting a 7-day trip next week and our first night will be in Cortez -- we are staying at the Hampton Inn, which I know will be nice. But expensive in August. Will have to give the lodging some thought.
Have fun in Laughlin. I've done that with friends several times and always enjoyed it, but that was years ago.
The bed is actually the best part of the room. The free breakfast is typical for Super 8. I will not be staying here for the rally if my spouse comes with. She has a thing about other peoples hair in the shower and sink. I'm not to particular but I might try another place out Sunday night for a comparison.
Beats sleeping in the back of a deuce and a half, or under a shelter half.
.
Damn, looks like a bad day to stop doing weed!
Hey Phantom, do we have an updated head count?
The parking beside the motel is somewhat limited but the rear lot is pretty large. I don't think you will have a problem.
Stayed at Best Western directly next door on my return trip and it's definitely an upgrade. Not sure what the summer rate would be. Don't get me wrong, Super 8 is ok unless your picky. I've slept in way worse for more $$$. There's a hotel/casino about 15 miles outside Cortez, Ute Mountain is the name and it looks nice. Good Mexican Restaurant within walking distance of S 8 called La Casita. A few mom n pop breakfast dives close too. Market directly across street also if you hate eating out every day. Refrig n micro in rooms.
Actually the Ute Mountain Casino is probably closer to 15 years old. It has been through two renovations I am aware of. Also it is on reservation land so they don't serve alcohol. Not a bad buffet but it has a reputation of having very low payouts on the gambling.
Tony, I am sorry to say that I can not make either trip this year. If you would, please remove me from the list.
