F150 was a surprisingly good match

Was toying around with a late model F150 on a local four-lane highway with traffic lights.

I like to wind it out a bit from red lights on this particular highway, nothing extreme, just changing gears at 4000 instead of the normal ~2500.

This F150 was behind me, but not tailgating, but clearly staying on my ass during what should have been hard acceleration for a four-wheeled vehicle.

We went back and forth a bit for a few miles. He got a red light, and I was behind him. He got on it hard when it went green, hard enough for me to be shifting at 4000-4500 to keep up. I rolled on it in 4th at about 60 mph, went to go around him. I was gaining in typical bike-vs-car fashion, but then he punched it. I twisted even further on it in 4th, did not downshift, and I backed off at 90 to keep things somewhat reasonable. This lasted a total of about three seconds.

I expected to walk right past this truck, but I didn't. I believe if I was crazy and kept going, I would have overtaken him, but not easily. I suspect it was one of those twin-turbo 3.5 V6s. Is a 5000+ lb truck that fast?!?

    Hmmm.
    I'm pretty sure an F-150 isn't 5,000 pounds.
My F-350 dually, 4 door, extended bed, 7.3l diesel is 5500 pounds....

I also would have thought you could have taken him before 4th gear....this is interesting!
    Cheers,

I caught a light and lined up against a McLaren 650s a few months ago. I had a good launch with wheel about 12” off the ground and shifted at 5500 each gear. At 100 mph, he was 1 to 2 cars lengths ahead and pulling. Took it to 120 which he was 3 to 4 then I let go.

The F6B is supposed be 3.3 sec 0 to 60 so you should have smoked him! Maybe if you were winding it out closer to 6 grand ya would have.

Hey Steve, just double-checked the curb weight of the F150 Super Crew ... just a hair under 5000 lbs. 4912 to be exact.

Yeah, I thought 60-90 in 4th would do it, too...maybe he modded the truck a bit ... friend of mine into racing says its easy to do and there's a lot of power left on the table from the factory these days.

Yeah, I saw that stat when they tested the F6B against the Harley. Again, it wasn't much of a "race", considering we started at 60 and it only lasted a few seconds. As mentioned, I was surprised that truck was even in the same league. What is the rpm range in 4th between 60-90 ... probably 3500-4500? If so, I was not winding it out while he was.

My daily is an F150 EcoBoost and it will scoot once you spool it up, which is quick. However, I don't believe it is any match for my F6. Yours had to be "tweaked" and as previously stated, there are a ton of mods available to get it there.

Like you said it could have been modded. There's some crazy mods for those turbo's.

What hat are you smoking? The McLaren is a 2.8 ish to 60 and runs the 1/4 in upper 10s at 130 mph plus. The F6B is not that fast. It may be in the upper 11s at 110-115 mph. Winding past 5500 is useles as the hp peak is 5500 and then drops from there.

    The F150
The Mclaren would have been a nice run for my ZX14R.

I did say "closer to 6 grand".
    Must be the small print.
