I'm pretty sure the front wheels are not just "falling off" - but I would like to know the conditions behind this sort of behavior.
How much force (head-on and/or laterally) does it take to produce this result?

Maybe there is a safety breakaway point that will help keep the rider from "launching over the bars" when there is a problem.
Maybe US potholes are wider and deeper than Japanese potholes.

I've been to Japan several times and honestly do not ever recall seeing a pothole on a paved road

For amusement I'll keep an eye out when I go back in January
