My dad was an engineer for the phone company (Bell Labs). Late 70s, we had stuff hooked up to our furnace, through the phone line, that could monitor temperature and change temperature settings. My mom hated that, but it was early technology. We always had prototype phones in the house too, we had some of the first push button phones over rotary.

Bell labs were way ahead in technology, if I'm not mistaken the transistor came out of there. Being retired from Ma Bell it was a great company to work for.
