    MOSCOW --
(AP) Russia's embattled currency, the ruble, is down 3.5 percent at the opening of trading in Moscow.

The ruble lost over 15 percent of its value this week despite Tuesday's massive interest rate hike by the Russian central bank.

The ruble has fallen sharply in recent weeks and is down more than 50 percent since January, due to sinking oil prices as well as the impact of Western sanctions imposed over Russia's involvement in Ukraine's crisis.

I live and work in the heart of the oil and gas industry. Lay offs are picking up steam. Cap ex for next year is being cut dramatically. What people don't realize is that, horizontal shale wells have a huge decline the first year of production. What you are will see in the next 18 months, is the talking heads on tv screaming oil shortage! Once the scale of the drilling pull back starts to show up in lower production numbers, we will be behind the curve once again, which is exactly what Saudi Arabia wants.

I just heard on business tv that practically all jobs that have been added to the economy are directly or indirectly related to the shale boom, I rest my case.

Paid $1.37 with my grocery discount today. Something I'm not too happy about. Being an oil industry guy all my life, there needs to be a balance. Rigs are being laid down at an alarming rate. The "shale" wells that have led to our abundance of north American oil have a tremendous decline rate. Once we are behind the curve, look out, prices are going to spike like you won't believe. How long will that take? I say two years or less. Enjoy it while you can. You can shut a rig down in one day, it takes months to put it back to work.
