Back in 2006 my older brother was diagnosed with lymphoid cancer. He needed a stem sell transplant in order to live. I happen to be a perfect match, I matched 6 for 6 out of the factors they (Doctors) look for in a doner, a 1 in 10,000 chance. Anyway, he lived in Florida and I had to fly back there for the procedure. I won't go into all that had to take place before I left and while I was there. Lets just say it is somewhat nerve racking. Long story short, he is still alive today! Here is a short poem I wrote after all was ok.

IF GIVEN THE CHANCE

If given the chance, would you give of yourself,
For someone else to live?
Bone marrow, stem cells maybe a kidney
You would have to give.

When it comes down to your family,
There is no decision you have to make.
You give of yourself with no question,
When your brothers life is at stake.

A stem cell transplant,
Was what was needed from me.
The procedure I really hated,
But I did not let him see.

Needles in my arms
And blood tubes lead to a machine.
Hoping I don’t spring a leak,
An awful mess it would be to clean.

Six hours later,
I am free to go.
Straight to the bar
For a beer don’t ya know.

The procedure a success,
My brother now cancer free!
Cells rebuilding his body
And all of them from me.

I know he is grateful,
So put me in your will.
Because you may keel over,
When I get around to sending the bill.
