What I don't understand about all of this is how do they know what the temperature was 1 million years ago? Did they find a caveman with a calender in one hand and a broken thermometer in the other hand?

I studied this stuff a long time ago.
By analyzing seeds, plant remains, and fossilized vegetable matter obtained from core samples, and organic remains buried under glaciers, volcanic dust, and bottom of lakes and sea beds, scientists can extrapolate the climatic conditions required to sustain their growth at the time.
