I really did not know how much until extreme heat this summer riding on the interstate. I opened them up for air from the lower side, and WOW---there is a lot of heat coming off the road and engine that I did not know was there. I made a special stop just to close them again. NEVER TOUCHED THEM SINCE! Combined with the hand wings, they sure make a lot of difference.
