I am VERY comfortable with leaving the K&N air filter and the NGK Iridium spark plugs in this bike for a total of 75,000 miles. Done it 3 times already on previous 1800 Wings, and I will do it again on this bike.
Miles you're on my wavelength on this. K&N...used on aircraft, cages, motorcycles, start out in life passing slightly (~3%) more fine doo than paper. Eventually they match paper's flow, and eventually they flow better than paper can while offering reasonable service intervals (via stacked debris vs plugged paper).

Ok, you got me on the Iridiums vs standard. They're my next changeout.

I wonder if it'd help any to have an oiled foam pre-filter over the air box intakes? Any easier to service between main filter change outs? The ATV's (Polaris) and dirt bikes I had used them effectively it seemed.

Here's a link to what it's supposed to look like under all the Tupperware:

I can see 2 air inlets,,,

Are there scoops that go in the inlets or is that it?

I assume those are the two inlet tubes...be easy to put a foam pre-filter over each. Might prolong the inevitable main filter replacement.

There are separate scoops. Here are the 2 scoops removed from the bike:

    These are from a 1st generation GL1800.

The 'do it yourself' air filter change vids/threads I see are Gen 1 GL1800. Example:

    http://www.scrc412.com/smf/index.php?topic=1157.0

Tons of electronics above the airbox. (Cruise, ECM, etc)

Anybody have a vid of air filter replacement on a 2nd Gen GL-1800?

(Partzilla has the scoops shown on a 2012 GL,,, R and L "air ducts",, $50 each,,,ouch)

I'll have to examine the feasibility of a pre-filter setup this winter.
