    A more efficient 3 cylinder engine design ????

    I found this interesting and could see something like this on a bike.

    That's cheating using 6 pistons on 3 cylinders. I like it, looks very mean with those pistons coming at each other.

    That is a cool design. The first thing that comes to mind is the pistons going back and forth across the ports. One would think that would be a potential problem area.

    This design is not that new. Fairbanks Morse developed this design in this late 30's. A 10 cylinder diesel version of this design was used in many of the World War II submarines. The engine was connected to a DC generator that in turn was used to power the drive motors or charge battery's as needed. Each submarine had 4 of these engine/generator combo's rated at 1600 horsepower each.

    It is in 2-stroke marine engines now, with ring breakage and problems finding machine shops that will bore a cylinder with holes in that cylinder. We have to ship our blocks off to have them bored because no shops around here will touch them for fear of breaking an expensive boring bar.
